E-medical records: What seems to be the problem?
Progress on electronic medical records has been held back by loose and overlapping technical standards and poor interoperability among different types of health care information systems sold by hundreds of different vendors. But the biggest obstacle may be a payment system that offers little financial incentive for most health care providers to invest in using e-medical record internally, let alone sharing them with other providers.

Personal E-health Records May Give Automation a Push
The advent of the personal electronic health record might just give the health care industry the push it needs to get records online.

Health Information Exchanges
A national electronic health record exchange is far from a reality, but a few local health care exchanges have emerged in the U.S. These allow member provider organizations to share electronic health record data, giving physicians a unified view of a patient's medical history.

Doctors push back on e-health records systems
Cost isn't the only reason why doctors object to using electronic medical records. Physicians say many systems fail to present information in the ways they need to see it.

Drug firm's R&D unit revamps application support
This drug firm's approach to application support uses more service-level metrics and fewer vendors.

Should we tell the boss?
We asked CIOs to talk about the kinds of messages they need to hear loud and clear from their staffers -- and the things they never, ever want to hear. Here's what they said.

The secret to getting value from outsiders
Paul Glen has discovered the secret to getting value from outside service providers. It's all about what you call them.

Editorial: Denial of IT projects' problems just delays the inevitable
As insightful as IT pros tend to be, too many in the profession too easily find occasion to slip into denial, writes Don Tennant.

Fix your flawed DNS ... NOW!
Frankly Speaking: A major flaw in the Internet's infrastructure has been found, and a fix is ready. Make that fix now. Don't wait one second, warns Frank Hayes.

IT group claims former official used pseudonym to discredit it in blogs
In another twist to a bizarre series of events, the ITSMF USA has sued its former executive director, claiming that he defamed the service management group in blog comments posted under a fictitious female name.

Computerworld Technology Briefing: Super-charging the Data Center
Virtualization is about a lot more than just lowering total cost of ownership. In fact users that have taken an open source path to virtualization have realized the additional, mission-critical benefit of markedly reduced IT complexity, as well as a more flexible infrastructure that is easier to change to meet shifting, often unpredictable business requirements.

Seven years and counting: National disease-tracking system still unfinished
For the past seven years, the federal government has been pushing the adoption of a Web-based system that public health agencies nationwide could use to report and track infectious disease outbreaks. But even now, only 38 of the 50 states are fully compliant with the system's technical requirements.

A security flaw in the DNS protocol didn't get Microsoft's top severity rating when the company and other vendors issued patches for it. But that belies the amount of attention being paid to the cache-poisoning vulnerability.
